News: From the Desk of
J. Michael Cross
I want to give a “Shout Out” to Jamestown City Mayor Darlene Monday Davis. Mayor Davis has been an inspiration to many of us with her sincerity, professionalism, drive and determination, vision and desire to serve. I remember coaching against “Coach Monday” about 40 years of age in the Pall Mall Christmas Tournament (we both coached elementary girls’ basketball at the time). Coach Darlene was a fiery (and very vocal) coach (as was I). I don’t remember the score, but going against her well trained and conditioned “girls” was always a challenge, and very enjoyable as well as educational.
But moving on….working with the Mayor has been instructive, enjoyable, and I hope, mutually beneficial to us both. As I said, we have been good friends for many years; so there has been a mutual understanding as to what our goals were, our limitations, our strengths and exactly what the desired results of our efforts were. There are not many times in life that we cross paths with individuals that possess her level of energy and vision.
Last year’s Christmas Program was a tremendous success with City and County working hand-in-hand. Mayor Davis took the lead on the project from conception to completion. The partnership with County, The HOPE Foundation, The Rotary Club and the Children’s Radiothon worked perfectly. The music, food, Parade of Trees and atmosphere provided a memorable experience for young and old alike.
As we worked on the Courthouse Beautification Project, Mayor Davis reached out to work hand in hand with her Street and Maintenance Department to be sure that we matched design, stone work, color of gravel, bench style, etc. As a result, downtown Jamestown and the Fentress County Courthouse rival any in the Upper Cumberland for beauty and attractiveness. Mayor Darlene Monday Davis, friend and colleague, thank you for your hard work, dedication and vision. You have made a difference.
