From the Desk of

J. Michael Cross County Executive

Many agencies help serve residents of Fentress County in a wide range of services. Some are more visible than others. In this week’s column, I want to highlight one agency’s effort to help feed the needy and elderly of the county through just one of the agency’s programs.

UCHRA (The Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency) has a field office in Fentress County in a shared facility with the Fentress County Senior Citizen’s Center. Though the UCHRA staff provides a variety of services and resources, we will focus on the Nutrition Program and Meals on Wheels. UCHRA County Coordinator Carol Watson runs these programs with a giving and generous heart and the desire to serve those among us who have needs.

Carol and her staff prepare meals for members of the Senior Citizen’s Center five days a week. These hot and nutritious meals provide seniors with a hardy meal at the Senior Citizen’s Center in a group setting. These “Congregate” meals give our seniors something to look forward to in a setting where they can visit and socialize with friends and family.

In addition to the “Congregate” meals, Carol and her staff deliver meals throughout the county to those who can’t get out and about. Drivers deliver these “Meals on Wheels” directly to the doors of these clients. Executive Assistant Amanda Hicks and I have had the opportunity to participate in delivering these meals throughout the county. It was an awe inspiring experience that humbles all involved. For some, these deliveries represent the only daily human contact that some of these folk have. They are eager to talk and visit, and look forward to a really good home cooked meal.

In the year to date, UCHRA has prepared 14,065 congregate meals for members of the Fentress County Senior Citizen’s Center and over 9,000 individually delivered meals through the “Meals on Wheels” Program. Even at that, we have several on the waiting list that would like to participate in the program. Sadly, with limited resources and man power, we can only do so much.

We thank UCHRA Director Like Collins for his continued services to our county. One of my duties as County Executive is to serve on the Executive Board of UCHRA with other County and City Mayors. It has been a privilege to serve and observe the hard work and dedication of our Agency staff members. And thanks Carol and Staff, for a job well done.
