From the Desk of
J. Michael Cross County Executive
As Fentress County Government moves forward in naming a candidate or nominee to complete the term of Sheriff in Fentress County, we have received several requests for a list of individuals who have turned in Resumes to the County Executive’s Office. We do want to point out that a list of “Resumes” is only for the benefit of the commission showing a list of individuals who have shown potential interest in the position. It is the responsibility of each potential nominee to apply for and receive POST Certification. POST (Police Officers Standards and Training Commission) MUST certify any and all candidates for Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee. It is therefore premature to use the Resume list to speculate which persons from the list who may or may not be designated by POST as an eligible candidate.
Fentress County Government has NO authority and NO input into the POST eligibility process and are not permitted by POST Rules to answer any questions about the process or the potential list of nominees. POST has informed Fentress County Government that they expect to have a list of POST Certified candidates by June 16 of this year. No one who is not post approved may be considered by the commission to fill the position. Individuals or candidates interested in more information may contact POST directly. In the meantime, we have contacted CTAS and Local Government for proper guidance in completing this process. Tennessee Code Annotated also outlines the steps or procedures necessary to fill any empty office or vacancy within County Government. We want to assure everyone that out Legal Council has researched these procedures fully, and that the Fentress County Commission is prepared to handle this delicate matter with full disclosure and proper procedures. We do appreciate the public’s interest in this important matter and extend our thanks for your input.
Additionally, we want to thank everyone for their patience. As outlined by TCA and CTAS, the procedure for filling a sheriff’s vacancy is a rather long and complicated process. Expediency, impatience or speed are often counter-productive. For more information, please feel free to contact the County Executive’s Office or your District Fentress County Commissioner.
