An update on the “Courthouse Beautification Project”: The stone masons are nearing completion of the retaining wall on the west side of the Fentress County Courthouse. After the stone work, the focus will shift to four other related projects. They include the construction of a stage area with adjacent sidewalks to be used for music events and patriotic ceremonies, refurbishing the existing sidewalks around the courthouse, lighting and electrical service for the wall and construction of a wrought iron fence around the perimeter of the wall. P & L Construction, LLC was low bidder for all four projects.
We are grateful to the Fentress County Health Department’s generosity for the $10,000.00 that they donated to the county to help defray the costs of the project. Additionally, the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce has applied for and received a $27,000.00 Beautification Grant to be used on the courthouse project. We are excited that we can, at a nominal cost, restore and improve the appearance of our Courthouse. We appreciate the input from the community, our “Beautification Committee” and our County Commissioners as the project unfolded and developed.
In addition to these improvements, we recently remodeled the “Small Courtroom” to the present “Community and Economic Development Conference Room”. This state of the art conference room creates a professional meeting place for the County Commission, Industrial Development Board, the Planning Commission as well as other community groups. Also, the Fentress County Courthouse has several original photos on display throughout the building that display the beauty and splendor of Fentress County. Local photographer Nelson Matthews has generously donated these pictures as a part of the beautification project. The public is invited to tour the courthouse and enjoy these works of art.
