From the Desk of
J. Michael Cross County Executive
Last week, I attended the Governor’s Conference in Nashville accompanied by my wife Barbara, Fentress County Chamber of Commerce Director Leann Smith and Fentress County Industrial Development Board Manager Scott Sandman. Our Keynote Speaker on Thursday was Martin Frey, a 56 year old business owner and investor. Martin is the only person in history to have climbed to the summit of the world’s seven tallest mountains on the seven continents and to have sailed all the seven seas by sailboat. This tremendous undertaking took 11 years to complete. As a motivational speaker, Martin kept the entire audience spellbound as he discussed the many difficulties, roadblocks, and obstacles that faced him and his team on his arduous adventures. Throughout the discussion of his many experiences, Martin emphasized the importance of teamwork, resilience, vision, determination, hard work, sacrifice and commitment. It was a great lesson in life to the many state and county leaders in attendance.
Friday’s Keynote Speaker was Governor Bill Haslam. As Governor Haslam gave us his “State of the State” report, he continued to emphasize the many great advantages of being a Tennessean. From the State’s economy, to Tourism Development, to Industry and Infrastructure, Tennessee is one of the top states in the country in many positive categories. In addition to Governor Haslam, we enjoyed presentations from Department of Economic Development Commissioner Randy Boyd, the Tennessee Department of Tourism Commissioner Kevin Triplett and Tennessee’s Commissioner of Agriculture Jai Templeton. Additionally, Fentress County’s Chamber of Commerce was recognized for their hard work in advancing the State’s Three Star Program. We congratulate Chamber Director Leann Smith and Tourism Director Misty Stephens for their dedication and perseverance.
