We have now completed Stage 1 of our Old Jail Demolition Project. The next part of our plan, Stage 2, will involve the creation of a “Beautification Committee” that will gather input from throughout our County as to the eventual completion of the Old Jail Renovation Project. That committee will consist of a broad range of interest and backgrounds, including a County Commissioner, a member of the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce, Fentress County Finance, local downtown business owners, someone representing the City of Jamestown, at least on local Health Department Official and citizens at large. That committee will report to the County Executive and the Fentress County Commission who will make the final decisions concerning the project. Stage 3 of the Project will be the implementation of those final plans.
In the meantime, through the use of Commissioner Miller’s drone, we have made overhead photos of the Fentress County Courthouse that have been enlarged and laminated by the Upper Cumberland Development District. These will be distributed to all our local High School Art Departments as competitive art and design projects to be submitted to our Beautification Committee. We will also invite local landscapers, Architects, Engineers or Design Artists to submit their ideas and suggestions as well.
Additionally, we invite members of the general public to contact their county commissioners or members of the Beautification Committee after their appointment at our next Fentress County Board of Commission Meeting on Monday, March 28 with ideas or suggestions.
We hope to recapture the simple beauty of the Courthouse while creating a multi-use area that reflects the historic architecture of our downtown area. Some of the ideas that we have already been presented to us include: a Multi-purpose stage for community and Patriotic ceremonies as well as musical events, picnic tables, benches, a fountain, shade trees, ornamental plants and shrubs, a rock garden and parking spaces. We want the end product to be one that accentuates both Fentress County and the City of Jamestown.
