Tennessee Commissioner of Tourism Kevin Triplett toured Fentress County last week. We were honored to have Commissioner Triplett stop by the Courthouse to speak with a sizable crowd from our local community and several members representing Fentress County Government. Thanks to the coordinating efforts from our Fentress County Chamber of Commerce, Commissioner Triplett gave an inspiring and heartfelt presentation concerning the present and future of tourism in Fentress County and Tennessee. The discussion included several interesting facts including: Tennessee is the 5th most visited state in the nation, with the top four destinations having beaches; Tennessee is ranked as the number one state in the nation for BBQ, with 12 of the top 50 BBQ restaurants in the country; Tennessee is the home of origin for seven different genres of music, and will feature a 1,600 mile “Music Trail” in the near future that will feature all seven music venues. It was also mentioned that Fentress County lays claim to a wide variety of recreational alternatives. We are thankful and excited that Commissioner Triplett took the time to visit Fentress County and welcome him back at any time.
In conjunction with Commissioner Triplett’s visit, Fentress County Government is proud to launch our new “Team Fentress” initiative. Following the momentum of last years “Tourism Initiative”, we felt it time to expand the scope of vision for the future of Fentress County. “Team Fentress” strives to focus on the unity, cooperation and teamwork necessary to foster both growth and progress for our county. Fentress County is proud to be the first in the Upper Cumberland to launch such an initiative, and hope to be a leader in teamwork and unity in our region. About once a month, County Mayors and Executives meet in Cookeville to discuss county and regional problems and concerns. After listening to “War Stories” from around the region, it is clear that we are at the forefront when considering team unity for our county. We want to thank our elected officials, Department heads, and County Staff for their professional and dedicated efforts.
We are sad to say goodbye to Assistant Director Mandy Smith with our Fentress County Senior Citizens Center. Her work, dedication, loyalty and love for our seniors was tremendous. We wish her the best in her new home in Texas. We are proud to announce that Mandy’s replacement brings an exciting skill set to our Center. Kelly Young is experienced in dealing with senior citizens, and is a Master Barber as well. With a great personality and years of experience, Kelly will be an asset to our seniors and to Director Alice Kirby. The Fentress County Senior Citizens Center is by far the best in the Upper Cumberland and one of the best in the state. We are excited to bring Kelly Young on board and plan to expand our services in the very near future.
Fentress County Ambulance Service Director Gary Peters recently announced his retirement after 44 years of service. We commend and congratulate Gary for his service and sacrifice. Gary was honored at our last County Commission Meeting. At that meeting, we named John Richards as Interim Director and Brian Tompkins as Interim Assistant Director. Additionally, the Commission voted to proceed with outsource billing for our Ambulance Service. We ask for patience as our Ambulance Service enters a period of transition, and are excited about the direction that we are headed. John Richards and Brian Tompkins have worked with the Fentress County Ambulance Service for many years and bring leadership, professionalism and a sense of selflessness and sacrifice as a part of their skill sets. Our goal is to offer the best service available from all our departments and agencies.
